30 Days of Night is a 2007 horror film based on the comic book miniseries of the same name published by IDW Publishing written by Steve Niles and illustrated by Ben Templesmith. Initially an unsuccessful film pitch, the series became a breakout success story for Steve Niles when Ted Adams President/CEO of IDW Publishing picked up the rights to publish the story.
The film 30 Days of Night, based on the breakout comic book was directed by David Slade and stars Josh Hartnett and Melissa George. The film was released in the U.S. on October 19, 2007 and November 1, 2007 in the UK. It was a the box office hit for its release week.
The film takes place in Barrow, Alaska which is preparing for its annual "30 days of night," a period during the winter when the sun will not be seen. People who don't want to suffer the extended darkness leave for Fairbanks or other parts south. As the town gets ready, The Stranger (Ben Foster), rows ashore from a larger ship, then trudges towards Barrow. Barrow's sheriff, Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) investigates seemingly unrelated and as he does so, he learns that his estranged wife, Stella (Melissa George), who moved out of town awhile ago, missed the last plane out of town and will have to spend the 30 day period in Barrow. The movie unfolds from this point with the introduction of the main characters and subsequent plot development.
